Sharing Our Work

Leadership for Equity & Inclusive Excellence Conference 2023

At this inaugural conference, we shared the work we are doing within the School of Education with the Equity Task Force and our partnership with the Oxford School District’s Equity Task Force. This conference was open to UM faculty, staff, and graduate students looking to engage in critical conversations, share best practices, and help build networks dedicated to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiative in higher education.

This presentation titled "Opportunity to Learn: Education Equity Initiatives in Teacher Education" shared with University stakeholders the critical work the School of Education is doing to improve relationships in the community to use high-leverage practices in all classrooms. This presentation specifically addressed the collaboration between Teacher Education faculty and Oxford School District and how it has further informed practices in both secondary and postsecondary classrooms.

2023 Conference Theme Pillars

Academic Diversity

The inclusion of diverse people with various attributes that contribute to the richness of teaching, learning, and research environments. These include but are not limited to diversity of experience and social identities.

Strategic Leadership

A type of leadership that involves expressing a strategic vision for the organization and motivating others to follow it. It is the ability to make quality decisions in the midst of the differences, similarities, and tensions that make up diversity.

Healthy Equity

The state in which everyone has a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health. Achieving this requires ongoing efforts to: address injustices; overcome obstacles to health and health care; and eliminate preventable health disparities.

Policy & Programming

Being the more visible aspect of our field, both policy & programming are how we implement, inform, and support our campus community members.

N.A.M.E (National Association for Multicultural Education) Conference

In November of 2023, our faculty members shared their work in a panel titled “Addressing Education Equity in Teacher Preparation: Looking Within to Plan for Tomorrow.” This panel discussion focused on one educator preparation program’s efforts regarding education equity. Efforts included the development of a teacher education equity task force including a PK-12 practitioner facilitator to examine coursework and clinical experiences with regards to equity and a series of education equity-themed summits. One key part of this presentation was sharing first-year baseline data which actively informed the task forces' decisions on teaching practice. Participants learned about both the framework for examining teacher education coursework, the impact of critical partnerships and practitioners' voices in terms of understanding equity, and about the training provided to university faculty and preservice teachers as apart of this initiative.
